Wind direction

Wind direction circuit

I chose a reed-switch solution for wind direction. There are a number of ways reed switches can be used, however I decided to simply collect the eight readings representing N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW into an 74HC165 8 bit, parallel load shift register. This solution offers scope to play around with the magnets and handle any peculiar byte values of data in code.

The resolution of wind direction is actually 16, not 8, compass directions because the magnet on the wind vane shaft is set so that adjacent reeds are 'on' if the direction lies between the 8 main directions.

100K resistors are used in series with the reeds to pull the voltage up when the reed is off, and not to draw much current when the reed is 'on'.
